Schott Foundation Names Edgar Villanueva as Senior Vice President

The Schott Foundation started 2020 by announcing that Edgar Villanueva will become the foundation’s Senior Vice President of Programs and Advocacy. Edgar is the author of the acclaimed book, Decolonizing Wealth, and has played a critical leadership role at the Schott Foundation and across the philanthropic sector. He leads Schott’s program team, building collaborations with grantees and among philanthropic partners that empower and strengthen the grassroots movement for education justice.

Years of Reform Efforts Contribute to Declining African-American Suspension Rates in California

After nearly a decade of school discipline reform in California, the suspension rate for African-American students continued to decline last year, according to recently released state data. The numbers suggest that a years-long push by discipline reform advocates, educators and the state toward restorative justice and positive behavior interventions may be working, experts said.

Boston Public School District Accused of Allowing ICE to Access Students' Data, Creating "Dangerous School-to-Deportation Pipeline"

Immigration advocates in Boston are demanding that the city's public school board stop allowing student information to be shared with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, after it came to light that dozens of student incident reports had been shared with the agency since 2014.

School Districts, Facing Students in Crisis, Say They're Owed Billions in State Aid

White Plains Superintendent Joseph Ricca said that if his district got some of the money it's owed, $12.8 million, he could attend to students' needs "before they become crises." Even though New York state is facing a $6 billion deficit, expectations are growing among school districts that the state Legislature may find a way to deliver those billions in aid.
