Native Youth Education & Health: Is Philanthropy up to the Challenge?

The Schott Foundation in partnership with Native Americans in Philanthropy, with support from Nike N7, recently released a set of recommendations for helping Native youth live healthy lives. These recommendations came directly from Native American leaders who hold expertise across health, physical fitness, education and youth development sectors. The report, Original Instructions, outlines both challenges and opportunities to philanthropy. It’s a first step towards using our resources to recognize and learn from the resilient Native youth.

Black Students in Chicago Suburb District Suspended at Higher Rate

African-American students make up about 6 percent of U46 district's 39,000-plus enrollment but received about 26 percent of all out-of-school suspensions in the 2016-17 school year, according to statistics presented to the U46 school board Monday.

"We are seeing sustained use of discipline that is disproportionate for African-American students," said John Heiderscheidt, the district's director of safety and culture.

Ohio's Largest Online Charter School Just Imploded

Despite years of critics raising concerns, the Electronic Classroom of Tomorrow's demise happened quickly, after two Ohio Department of Education reviews from 2016 and 2017 found that ECOT had overbilled taxpayers by $80 million for thousands of students it couldn’t show were meeting the department’s enrollment standards.

National Women's Law Center Sues Betsy DeVos Over Discrimination Against Sexual Violence Survivors

Title IX, the civil rights law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, requires that schools treat students who report sexual violence and alleged perpetrators equally: schools can’t decide they value or believe one side more than the other. But DeVos' new policy lets schools give accused students more rights than survivors. It even allows alleged rapists to directly interrogate their victims.
