the School-to-Prison Pipeline in Meridian, MS Derrick Johnson, State President of the Mississippi NAACP, writes about how for years, Meridian families reported to the MS-NAACP that their children were routinely and unfairly denied educational opportunities, criminalized and even subjected to incarceration, including children as young as ten years old and children with disabilities. He and other advocates in the state celebrate the groundbreaking lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in Meridian to protect the rights of vulnerable children and end the city's unconscionable operation of a school-to-prison pipeline. NYC, "Demography Is Still Destiny" New York City policymakers and education officials seem convinced that their choice-based reform agenda and "no excuses" attitude is the way forward. But a new report from the Annenberg Institute for School Reform (AISR) shows that demography still trumps choice, and until the city takes seriously the need for more a equitable distribution of resources, a student's zip code and education redlining will continue to determine his chances for educational success. Accompanying the report is an interactive map tool from the Coalition for Educational Justice that highlights the relationship between the college readiness of high school graduates and the socio-economic makeup of their communities. Youth Advocates Survey 400 Students on Discipline Our friends and allies at the Boston Student Advisory Council and the Boston Area Youth Organizing Project hit the streets as part of the Dignity in Schools Campaign's National Week of Action on School Pushout. For the annual Listening Project event, the youth advocates went to three subway stations across the city and interviewed over 400 students about their experiences with their schools' discipline policies.
