The #RedforEd Wave Is Likely to Build, Not Subside, in 2019

Earlier this year, #RedforEd campaigns took off around the country, from West Virginia to Oklahoma and points in between. Teachers and support staff, even in notoriously anti-labor states like Arizona, walked off the job and into state capitals, demanding better pay and more funding for schools, among other key issues.

With 2019 just around the bend, the wave of education activism shows no signs of ebbing.

Earlier this week Schott held a webinar with several contributors to the book, which turned into a wide-ranging discussion of school discipline reform, grassroots organizing, and coalition-building.

We Are All L.A.!

Schott grantee partner Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools recently published a full-page ad in the Los Angeles Times — co-signed by more than 380 groups across the country — supporting LAUSD teachers, increased public funding for their public schools, and more equitable policies for all L.A. students.

The struggle in Los Angeles is critical, because what happens in L.A. will set the tone for education funding and policy for years to come.

A New Congress, Time for a New Focus on Public Education

As the dust settles from last month’s midterm elections, parents, students, community members and educators of America are savoring our victories and preparing for the long fight ahead for the public schools that our students deserve.

We are working to remedy decades of fiscal austerity in our public schools. Between 2005 and 2017, public schools in the U.S. were underfunded by $580 billion in federal dollars alone—money that was specifically targeted to support some of our most vulnerable students.

Report: NY's Black Students Suspended Far More Than Whites, Others

Black students on Long Island are about five times more likely than whites to be suspended from their public schools, according to a report released Sunday by a coalition of education, civil rights and business groups that finds similar racial disparities across the state.

Overall, the analysis found, such out-of-school suspensions were experienced by more than 66,000 students statewide of all races and ethnicities.
