Critics of Betsy DeVos Rally on Education Department's Turf

Led by a high schooler from the South Side of Chicago and members of the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, a crowd of about 50 critical of U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos gathered outside the U.S. Department of Education on Thursday. They carried boxes filled with 80,000 report cards grading DeVos' first year as education secretary.

Edgar Villanueva to Speak at 2018 Yale Philanthropy Conference

The 2018 Yale Philanthropy Conference, held this year on Friday, February 23, will cover a range of pressing issues facing the philanthropic sector — from internal organizational questions of capacity and sustainability, to outward facing questions like responsive grantmaking and communications. Schott VP Edgar Villanueva will be speaking on the afternoon panel "Toward Equity: Advancing Responsive Philanthropy."

Native Youth Education & Health: Is Philanthropy up to the Challenge?

The Schott Foundation in partnership with Native Americans in Philanthropy, with support from Nike N7, released a set of recommendations for helping Native youth live healthy lives. These ideas came directly from Native American leaders who hold expertise across health, physical fitness, education and youth development sectors. The report is a first step towards using our resources to recognize and learn from the resilient Native youth.

Organization Behind Charter Push In Mass. Will Close Amid Scandal

Last year, the Massachusetts Office of Campaign and Political Finance ordered the advocacy arm of Families for Excellent Schools to pay a $425,000 fine — the largest such penalty on record — for practices that masked the source of personal donations to the group. As part of the settlement, FES's advocacy group agreed to stop fundraising in the state and published the names of its top donors.

The Coalition for Community Schools is planning a month of community school advocacy to target legislators at the local, state and federal levels, and their forthcoming Policy Playbook will direct people to specific activities to do throughout the month to capture the attention of elected officials across the country. St. Paul Teachers Say Yes to a Possible Strike Next Week

If no favorable agreement between the two parties is reached by February 17, the approximately 3,400 members of the St. Paul Federation of Teachers will go on strike for the first time since 1946.

The union is making plans to create “Safe Sites” if the strike goes forward, in order to serve marginalized families who rely on the schools for such things as meals and childcare.
