OCR Data Reveals Major Inequities for Students of Color

The U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights released shocking new evidence about the "opportunity gap" for students of color. The data, collected from 6,835 school districts and accounting for 85 percent of all public school students, reveals that students of color face serious inequalities in our nation's schools. They are disproportionately targeted by harsh school discipline policies and lack equitable access to experienced teachers, early childhood education and gifted programs. Read more>

FL Parents Organize Against "Parent Trigger" Proposal
Florida policymakers should have realized by now that something isn't right with their proposed "parent trigger" legislation. The parents the bill purports to empower are organizing against it. Writing in her Washington Post blog, Valerie Strauss said parents aren't fooled by the illusion of choice represented by parent triggers. They know that handing over low-performing schools to private or charter management organizations isn't how you help them improve.  Read more>

Teacher Job Satisfaction Plummets
After being attacked by policymakers across the country and blamed for all the problems in our nation's education system, it's not surprising that fewer teachers are happy in their chosen profession. According to the annual MetLife Survey of the American Teacher, there was a 15 point drop in teacher job satisfaction from 59 percent in 2009 to just 44 percent in 2011. Read more>
