Officials Identify Suspect in Deadly Santa Fe High School Shooting

A high school in Santa Fe, Texas was the tragic scene of a school shooting today, which killed ten people and injured ten others. Authorities have said two people have been detained. Federal law enforcement officials identified one of them as Dimitrios Pagourtzis, and said he is suspected of having fired the shots.

This is the 22nd US school shooting since the beginning of the year, and the third instance in eight days in which a gunman was on a school campus.

Massachusetts Senate Approves Education Funding Reform

The Massachusetts Senate voted unanimously last Thursday to update the state’s 25-year-old education funding formula.

The reform bill S.2506 was introduced by Sen. Sonia Chang-Díaz and co-sponsored by 36 senators. It would implement the recommendations of the bipartisan Foundation Budget Review Commission (FBRC) which found that the foundation budget formula is underestimating education costs by $1 billion to $2 billion every year.

Minnesota’s Governor Pushes a Radical Idea: Give Schools More Money

Amidst a backdrop of rolling teacher strikes and union-government showdowns, Minnesota’s Democratic governor, Mark Dayton, recently made what may seem like a radical, pro-education proposal. On May 1, as Minnesota lawmakers began wrestling over how to spend down a $329 million projected budget surplus, Dayton made a “late plea,” asking legislators to steer nearly $138 million into emergency funding for the state’s public schools.

Inside the Closed Facebook Groups Where the Teacher Strikes Began

In these groups, teachers and school workers often express outrage at the lack of respect shown them and their students, as reflected in salaries that don’t provide a living wage, insufficient pensions, and deteriorating conditions in classrooms and schools. Facebook groups become the forum and organizing space most state teachers unions have refused to provide.

Lawsuit Claims New Jersey Law Codifies School Segregation

On the 64th anniversary of the landmark Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision, Mr. Estevez, as president of the Latino Action Network, together with about a dozen other plaintiffs, filed a lawsuit against the State of New Jersey on Thursday, calling on it to desegregate its schools statewide. “The promise of Brown is not being realized in New Jersey,” Mr. Estevez said.
