In cities across the country, education officials are closing public schools en masse, impacting thousands of students, disproportionately those from communities of color or low-income families. Officials use a variety of justifications to defend the closures, citing everything from budget concerns to promises of better opportunities for students. Taking Back the "No Excuses" Mantra in PA

No Excuse

“No excuses" has been a mantra of ed "reformers" who dismiss the effects of poverty and inequity on student achievement and instead fault teachers and school leaders. Last week, the term was rebranded by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, who used it to critique policymakers in Philadelphia for pushing the school district into bankruptcy and failing to invest adequately in the city's schools. Suspension Spike A report from New York City Comptroller John Liu compares the city's pervasive use of zero-tolerance discipline policies in schools to the city's controversial and discriminatory stop-and-frisk practices. While the report is particular to NYC schools, its analysis of the school pushout crisis and what needs to change can be readily applied to any district in the country, which makes it a terrific resources for advocates and organizers.
