One in five school police officers say their school is not prepared to handle an active-shooter situation, according to a nationally representative survey of school resource officers conducted by the Education Week Research Center. And some school police report they haven't been adequately trained to work in schools. Some also say their schools don't set limits on their role in student discipline, which civil rights groups say is necessary to protect the rights of students.

New Mexico School Funding Found Unconstitutional

In a major victory for New Mexico public school children, the district court, in a July 20 ruling, found that inadequate school funding violates the education article of New Mexico’s constitution, as well as violating the constitutional equal protection and due process rights of economically disadvantaged students, English Language Learners and Native American students.

As School Discipline Disparities Worsen, Illinois Has Yet to Require Reforms

The Illinois State Board of Education redacts the race and ethnicity of nearly all students who’ve been suspended or expelled, so parents and school communities can’t see what’s happening in their local districts. On top of that, the state board hasn’t required districts with the consistently highest suspension and expulsion rates to make any changes.
