Inaction On School Funding Will Keep Opportunity Gaps In Place

Last week’s failure of the Massachusetts legislature to reaffirm the state’s commitment to education by revisiting its school funding formula was another devastating setback to equitably supporting low-income students, primarily students of color. A recent report from the Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center found that the formula – known as the foundation budget – underestimates what districts are spending annually on education by at least $2.6 billion.

By eschewing the charter model, LeBron James not only avoids what many critics consider to be the privatization of education; he may also shore up the school system’s ability to address, rather than aggravate, existing inequalities. The I Promise school deliberately chose, via lottery, students with records of truancy or disciplinary problems, and will provide psychological counseling to both students and teachers.

New York Mistakenly Shortchanged Schools on Some Funding

New York state education officials say they inadvertently shortchanged most school districts when distributing federal funding for teacher training last year, and gave charter schools more than their share. To fix the $12 million error, the state Education Department will reduce Title IIA funding for overpaid districts for the next few years.

Hurricane Lessons: What We’ve Learned from Post-Katrina Disaster Capitalism in NOLA Schools

Jeff Bryant of the Education Opportunity Network recently moderated a Netroots Nation panel on education privatization in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and the lessons we can learn from the struggle of New Orleans residents to reclaim their public schools. Panelists also connected the privatization after Katrina with the privatization push happening right now in Puerto Rico, accelerated after Hurricane Maria.
