Advancing Racial Justice in 2015:
A Weekend of Movement Building in New Orleans

Under a beautiful October sky on the edge of the French Quarter, 700 people from around the country converged on New Orleans. Students, parents, teachers, community activists, labor organizers, policy experts, and advocates of a multitude of issues came together for a weekend of education, collaboration, and engagement.

Featured Campaign: Mississippi Ballot Initiative

The Mississippi constitution requires “the establishment, maintenance and support of free public schools upon such conditions and limitations as the Legislature may prescribe,” making it one of few states whose constitution does not explicitly require fair and adequate public school funding.
Our grantee One Voice and partners launched “Better Schools, Better Jobs” to mobilize around a proposed amendment to change the constitution.

Featured Grantee: Journey for Justice Alliance

Journey for Justice (J4J) is an alliance of grassroots community, youth, and parent-led organizations in 21 cities across the country. J4J Executive Director Jitu Brown helped lead a 34-day hunger strike against the closing of Dyett High School in Chicago's Bronzeville neighborhood.

New Report on Lack of Teacher Diversity in the U.S.

A report by the Shanker Institute brings attention a major problem in education: while the percentage of students of color has been rising, the number of teachers of color has failed to keep up. For black educators, the situation is even worse. Over the past decade, the number of black educators has declined in all the cities surveyed in this study. In some places, like New Orleans and Washington, D.C., that drop has been huge. Read more>

Racial Justice and LGBTQ+ Organizations Join Forces to Stop School to Prison Pipeline

A new report by a trio of racial justice and LGBTQ+ organizations highlights an important but overlooked facet of the school to prison pipeline: LGBTQ+ students are also at risk from harsh disciplinary policies. The Equality Federation, the Advancement Project, and the Gay Straight Alliance Network worked together to publish their report, called Power in Partnerships: Building Connections at the Intersections to End the School-to-Prison Pipeline. The Power of Opt Out to Preserve Public Education

Opt out parents are now seeing beyond the stress of their children and becoming attuned to the connections between testing and charter schools, the Common Core, teacher evaluations based on test scores, school closings, and other politically popular policies designed to undermine public schooling.
