Grantee Spotlight: Girls for Gender Equity

'Silence Breakers' Like GGE's Tarana Burke named TIME Person of the Year

This year, girls and women across the globe made the media confront the reality of sexual assault and harassment by telling their stories with the hashtag #MeToo. Project Focus: Girls of Color

Schott Foundation, with support from The Boston Foundation and The Hyams Foundation, has raised $25,000 to support Project Focus: Girls of Color (GoC), a partnership between Boston At-Large City Councilor Ayanna Pressley and the National Black Women’s Justice Institute (NBWJI).

The partnership engages Black girls and girls of color as key policy stakeholders and school culture reformers and provides direction to Boston public, parochial and private schools on ways to assess their disciplinary policies through a lens of racial and gender equity/impact. The project aims to reduce subjectivity in the development and implementation of disciplinary policies towards the goal of reducing racialized gender disparities in school discipline.

The project has already engaged over 100 girls of color, parents, school administrators and educators through focus groups and hearings. Look out for the upcoming policy recommendations in March 2018!

The research was focused on the South, an area often overlooked in related research. The report offers strategies and much-needed guidance based on the findings to improve relations between SROs and girls of color at schools.

Why This Juvenile-Court Judge Worries About School Resource Officers

The absurdity of zero tolerance discipline policies is compounded when educators invite law enforcement—also commonly known as school resource officers (SROs)—to roam hallways under the guise of protecting students from harm. Instead, they often use their policing powers to wrongly criminalize minor disruptive behaviors. What's even more disturbing is that such policies disproportionately affect students of color.

Beware the 'Portfolio' District Model

A new report in the education news outlet Chalkbeat reveals a shadowy nationwide network of pressure groups called Education Cities that pushes urban school districts to adopt what it calls a "portfolio" model for schools. The name portfolio is an analogy to the stock market and suggests districts manage their schools as if they were a collection of separate "investments" on the stock market.
