In the 2009-2010 school year, more than 190,000 school days were lost to out-of-school suspensions and expulsions in Massachusetts, according to an analysis of the effects of 'zero-tolerance' discipline policies from The New England Center for Investigative Journalism. And like national statistics, harsh discipline measures in MA are disproportionately meted out to minority students. Read more >

When Dire Statistics Lose Their Shock Value

Worse than the dire academic and achievement statistics for our nation's male students of color is the notion that those dismal numbers are repeated so often that they lose their shock value and, consequently, their ability to inspire action. Pedro Noguera criticizes education reform efforts that seek to "save" young male students of color by separating them from the rest of the population in single-sex schools or classrooms. Instead we should be working to close the underlying opportunity gap. Read more>

The report, Frozen Funding Leads to Cracks in the Foundation, details how the state's under-investment in Pre-K programs incurs long-term costs for society and disproportionately harms students of color.
