The latest research underscores the grim reality that we still face great challenges. In cities across the country, many working people are struggling against high levels of poverty (individuals working full time and earning less than 200% of the federal poverty guidelines), an affordable housing crisis, and persistent racial and economic segregation within communities and schools. Loving Cities Index research reveals that on average local systems are still only delivering between 30-50% of the supports children need to have a fair and substantive opportunity to learn and thrive. This weekend, Our Voice Our Schools coalition is gathering a group of community practitioners and activists to come together at Denver University and align around a comprehensive agenda for education justice in Denver. The goal of the event: to move from talk to action by creating a comprehensive Loving School System agenda that highlights the systemic changes and investments needed to truly provide Black children in Denver their right to free, high-quality public education.

A new research project and toolkit by Grantmakers for Girls of Color opens a window into opportunities for philanthropy to be more equitable and accountable to girls of color and shines a light on how critical the reality of underfunding is for organizations led by and for girls of color. The toolkit provides a series of activities and resources to facilitate discussion and action within philanthropy.

Though 85% of the city's public school students are Latino, black and Asian, "the authors of books in commonly-used elementary school curriculum are, on average, 84% white — a percentage more fitting for Bismarck, ND (82% white) or Dubuque, IA (80% white) than New York City," according to the study, “Chronically Absent: The Exclusion of People of Color from NYC Elementary School Curricula.”

A new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities confirms that teacher walkouts pressured state governments into raising funds for public education. The walkout states of Arizona, North Carolina, and West Virginia raised per pupil spending by 3-9%. However, CBPP found that public schools in walkout states are still significantly underfunded.
